F-150 Lightning Offers More Power, Payload Capacity, and Range

As the new Ford F-150 Lightning makes its way to customers this week, the company officially announced that the pickup will arrive with more power, payload capability, and all-electric range than previously mentioned. Additionally, Ford announced its new cloud software that more accurately estimates the pickup’s range while towing in real-time. Essentially, the more you use it, the more accurately it can estimate.

“We were seriously focused on raising the bar on this truck, including after we revealed it, so we can deliver more for our customers,” said Dapo Adewusi, F-150 Lightning vehicle engineering manager. “And our drive for continuous improvement will get a big boost when we start getting feedback and ideas from customers when they receive their Lightnings.”

The extended-range battery gives drivers a whopping 580 horsepower – a noticeable boost from the previously mentioned 563 horsepower. The standard-range battery pack also got an upgrade, now supporting owners with 452 – up from the targeted 426 horsepower originally stated. Both packs are able to produce 775 lbs.-ft. of torque, which is the most of any F-150 pickup ever.

“Considering the initial numbers were impressive, these are amazing!,” says F-150 Lightning customer and high school teacher Travis Piser. “It really inspires a lot of confidence about how the truck will perform.”

As if the news above wasn’t enough, Ford has also introduced a new tool integrated into first F-150 Lightning deliveries to target a common worry amongst EV truck owners – towing range anxiety.

Every new Ford-150 Lightnings are stocked with Ford’s Intelligent Range feature – a new cloud-based database and analytics system that compares your truck’s energy use against a multitude of sources for better range estimates. Such data includes Ford pickups that have towed on similar roads and/or with similar trailers. This Ford-exclusive feature also factors in driving conditions like traffic speed, overall temperature, climate control in the EV, and even the owner’s particular driving habits.
