Ford & DTE Energy Make U.S.’s Largest Renewable Energy Purchase

Ford recently announced that its partnering with Energy Company DTE toward a clean energy agreement which entails the supply of renewable energy for the blue oval company’s innovative electrified vehicles. More specifically, DTE is going to introduce 650 megawatts (MW) of new solar-powered energy to Ford’s production efforts in Michigan by 2025 through its MIGreenPower program.

The idea is that this will all aid Ford in decarbonizing its company-wide operations in the region and securing its clean energy goal a full 10 years earlier than anyone thought. This landmark agreement also details that Ford will use renewable energy to develop and manufacture all of its vehicles in Michigan. The agreement marks the largest renewable energy purchase ever made in the United States. Additionally, the agreement augments Michigan’s installed solar capacity by nearly 70%.

“This unprecedented agreement is all about a greener and brighter future for Ford and for Michigan,” said Jim Farley, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company. “Today is an example of what it looks like to lead… to turn talk into action.”
DTE also suggests the agreement will create 250 temporary and ten permanent jobs while bolstering the local economy. DTE is the largest renewable energy provider in Michigan and plans to expand its clean energy initiatives through its MIGreenPower program.

In terms of the overall electrification of its vehicle lineup, Ford is having success across the board. For example, the Ford F-150 Lightning secured its best month since its release this summer, selling 2,173 units. What’s more, the company just reopened orders for the much sought-after EV truck. Ford’s Mustang Mach-e sales also rose 74.1%, and the company’s E-transit still holds a dominant 95% market share.

Ford is very rapidly doubling down and establishing its clean energy goals. The automaker, like many companies, is planning to go carbon neutral by 2050. However, Ford is putting more upfront money down with plans to invest over $50 billion by 2026 to scale EV production and transform its business. Electric vehicle sales are soaring, and Ford continues to add significant renewable energy capacity to its productions.
