Ford F-150 Lightning Becomes MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year

Ford recently revealed a major announcement that makes another significant step toward the mainstreaming of EVs in the United States. More specifically, the automaker revealed that Motor Trend magazine named the Ford F-150 Lightning EV its 2023 pickup Truck of the Year. Setting a new precedent, this is the first time an EV has been the uncontested choice for the Truck of the Year award among Motor Trend judges.

This isn’t the only time that Motor Trend has named an EV an overall winner; in 2022 it awarded the Lucid Air EV as its 2022 Car of the year, and Rivian R1T its pickup truck of the year. But to be the uncontested champ as an electric vehicle is a new feat that only the F-150 Lightning has managed.

Ford stated that the F-150 Lightning is America’s best-selling electric truck in November, with sales reaching 2,062. Since Ford began shipping out the Lightning in May, sales have reached new heights of 13,258 units sold. This all helped the company become the No. 2 EV brand by sales in the U.S. year to date!

Before factoring in certain tax rebates, the Ford F-150 Lightning’s price starts at $51,974 in base Pro model trim, which arrives with dual motors, 240 miles of all-electric range, and an incredible 452 horsepower. Moving up a trim level to XLT and including an extended battery improves the range to 320 miles and horsepower to 580 will set buyers back nearly $81,000.

“[The F-150 Lightning] offers a host of features no gas- or diesel-powered truck can match. Be it for the campsite, the job site, or the homestead, the Lightning offers up a world of new possibilities for truck owners all while saving them money at the pump and likely at the repair shop, too. It’s a bargain many are going to find exceedingly easy to live with,” Motor Trend’s Scott Evans stated to the press.

Ford also stated that the automaker is boosting production and deliveries of the F-150 Lightning at its Rouge complex in Dearborn, Michigan, with the target being 150,000 Lightning EVs delivered by the end of 2023.
