Mustang Mach-E and Explorer Impress in New IIHS Test

The Mustang Mach-E and Explorer receive good ratings from the IIHS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is one of the most respected names in vehicle safety, and they hold their tested vehicles to high standards. Because of this, the IIHS frequently updates their tests to see how vehicles hold up to more extreme or more common circumstances, providing consumers and automakers alike with a more accurate picture of how safe any given car is. One of those recently updated tests was for front overlap crashes, and the Mustang Mach-E and Explorer both recently underwent their trials and performed well.

Thirteen different midsize SUVs were tested, and the Mustang Mach-E and the Explorer were two out of the four vehicles that received the highest possible rating, the “good” tier, from the IIHS. The Mustang Mach-E in particular not only achieved good ratings in the updated front overlap crash test, but in every safety category tested by IIHS, giving it the best score of any electric midsize SUV that the IIHS has tested up to this point. Both the Mustang Mach-E (when equipped with specific headlights) and the Explorer have earned recognition as IIHS Top Safety Picks.

“Safety and quality are two of our top priorities,” said Jim Baumbick, vice president, Ford Product Development and Quality. “Receiving this recognition from IIHS for Mustang Mach-E and Explorer has reaffirmed that we’re focused in the right places to help make our customers’ lives better.”

The updated moderate front overlap crash testing includes measuring impact to rear-seat occupants. Previous iterations of the test only measured the impact to front passengers, providing a less-than-accurate picture of how well the vehicle would fare overall in such a crash. By updating the test, the IIHS provides the automotive industry and its customers with more vital information. All Mustang Mach-E vehicles receive a good rating on this test, and the 2022-23 Ford Explorer receives it as well. Ford’s use of seat belts with pretensioner and load limiting technologies in both the first and second row seats of these vehicles were part of what helped them both achieve such good results.

Ford is currently America’s top-selling SUV brand for 2023, and the Explorer is America’s best-selling three-row midsize SUV, with the Mustang Mach-E following closely as the second-best selling electric SUV in 2022. With test results like this, it’s easy to tell that the impressive safety of these vehicles is certainly a contributing factor in their success.
